This video was a combination of ideas. MOPP and Stevie’s initial idea was to do something similar to Michel Gondry video for Sugar Water by Cibo Matto. My idea was to use a fixed camera, which gives the audience the feel of being attached to the protagonist.

So with the split screen, the trick was to create juxtaposed scenarios, two different people leading two very different lives. This was visually highlighted by the change in colour temperatures. While Stevie’s scenes were shot with a blue tinge, in MOPP’s scenes the colour temperature is upped to give off more of an Orange look (I’m well aware this is a fairly obvious trick, but if it works, it works lol).

The two are also juxtaposed through out with actions. Stevie wakes up in a bed, MOPP wakes up on the floor. Stevie drinks water, MOPP drinks a beer. Stevie sits at a computer screen working, MOPP takes a nap in the afternoon.

The whole point is to push a feeling of minutia and tedium throughout the day. It’s nuts and bolts and boredom. MOPP wanders around bored and listless. Stevie sits at his computer screen unmotivated. It all fits with the pace of the song, which has a consistent mood and the lyrics which have an almost melancholy feel to them.

The song then kicks into high-gear and that’s when the biggest juxtaposition happens. While we have a long unbroken shot of Stevie on one side watching TV, the shots of MOPP at a clubs go into a crazy scattershot style of frame by frame editing.

The video was shot in two days, Stevie’s scenes where shot near Stirling and MOPP’s scenes were shot in Glasgow.

HIGH POINT: I like the scenes where MOPP gets beaten up lol. If you look closely you’ll see my cameo as one of the guys beating him up.
