SNAKE PLISSKEN - Mind Set

This is probably my most un-abashed case of ripping a bunch of other Music Videos off. If you watch the videos for “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry, “Seek Bromance” by Tim Berg and the Adidas Originals commercials you’ll pretty much see where the video came from.
Obviously the idea was to create something very summery, a video which combined the dreamy and almost hypnotic pace of the start of the song, with the more flashy visuals during the bombastic later sections.
There’s nothing too complicated here. Get some pretty people in an open car, get them to drive around in the sun, set up several scenarios people might do when cruising around and then climax it with a big party.
The colour grading style is pretty simple. It’s simply lightening the shadows, making the blacks navy-blue and then upping the high lights and mid-tones and then de-saturating the overall image a little bit.
The party scene took about four hours to shoot. I scheduled it so that we shot each section one at a time. First we shot all the band coverage, then we shot the dancers, then we shot the Jacuzzi, then we shot the pillow fight, then we shot the shower. In fact the scene of the three main characters entering the house was shot last.
I made a conscious decision not to include any scenes of party goers drinking as I felt it would give off the wrong impression, change the tone from something fun, to something more seedy. I’m sure there’s an assumption they’re all drinking but my own prudishness meant I decided not to make it explicitly obvious.
The majority of the car scenes were shot from inside the car. Three people seemed like the optimum number because it stopped any of the characters from appearing like a couple but it also allowed me to very easily film from inside the car. I wanted it to feel like the viewer was almost the fourth person in the car and to really feel like they’re part of this journey.
I did however get a few exterior shots and these were achieved by sitting in the back of a pick up while the car drove behind and periodically passed the pick-up.
HIGH POINT: The party, I was very pleased with how it turned out
